1. General check up
Even if you feel mostly healthy, make an appointment with your GP for a general check up. We usually visit the doctor only when we feel unwell, and the visit is mainly about relieving that issue. But a regular check up will allow the doctor to run other checks and tests to ensure there is nothing else that could have the potential to cause a problem later. The Movember campaign reminds men to ask for testicular and prostate cancer checks.
2. Get outdoors
Have you been getting a regular dose of fresh air? Build some outdoor time into your routine. Talk to your Prestige Inhome Care worker about including visits to parks, river or beach trails, street cafes and neighbourhood sites while they are with you. Fresh air and sunshine boost your mood, lower your heart rate and help you feel happier and less anxious.
And don’t forget your hat and sunscreen!
3. Eat right
People living with a disability have a higher risk of developing secondary health conditions. Eating healthy foods in healthy portions will help you improve your immune system and also help you think clearly and feel less lethargic. Are you getting your two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables a day? Talk to your carer about helping you prepare a food plan that is good for you. Your Prestige carer can also help you prep and cook the food.
4. Spend time with others for fun
Occasionally, time spent at appointments or undertaking your routine activities can leave you tired and lacking in motivation to keep company with others. Mental and emotional fitness is improved by spending time with other people, of all ages and interests. So join a club or community group where you can give your brain and body a boost, and lift your mood. Chat with your support worker about finding the right activity for you – maybe a book or chess club, a gym session, op shopping or volunteer activities. Your Prestige Inhome Care NDIS support worker is also a good resource to inspire you to trying new group activities that are fun and will help you achieve your goals.
