Prestige Inhome Care Supports The Homer Hack

Prestige Inhome Care is honoured to support The Homer Hack, a registered charity dedicated to advancing the research, diagnosis, and support for rare gene variants that impact the developing nervous system. This partnership holds special significance for Prestige, as it was forged through a meaningful client relationship.

The Homer Hack was born out of a profound personal journey. Founder D’Arne Finnis and her family endured a 14-year struggle with misdiagnosis and invasive medical procedures in their quest to understand their son’s dysregulated nervous system. Their perseverance led them to discover the critical role of the Homer and other scaffolding genes in cell function and neurological disease. This sparked the creation of The Homer Hack, which aims to bridge gaps in research and support for conditions linked to these rare gene variants.

“Our family was fortunate to be able to use Prestige’s services for attendant care for my son,” D’Arne Finnis shared. “It made such a difference to have a carer to help with transport to ensure that he could get to his appointments and importantly, to his educational courses. Having three children, it was very difficult to get everyone where they needed to be, particularly with the additional medical appointments and all that a life in rare disease entails.  The wonderful support we accessed from Prestige meant that our son was able to complete two Hospitality courses and is now working as a chef. We are so happy and indebted to Prestige and have so much joy seeing the wonderful career our son is now enjoying and the pride he has in his achievements. Thank you, Prestige!”

The Homer Hack’s mission is to address the challenge of limited research for debilitating neurological conditions caused by rare scaffold gene variants. These variants can have the potential to impact how the brain forms connections, affecting information processing, learning, and memory. Many conditions, including Autism, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Depression, and Epilepsy, are thought to be linked to altered gene, protein, or cell connectivity.

“When there is little to no research for debilitating conditions, it is very hard as a family to know what to do and where to turn. This is exactly the reason that The Homer Hack was established. We are working hard to bridge the gap by enabling research through our fundraising efforts, translating knowledge and supporting families diagnosed with neurological conditions caused by rare scaffold gene variants,” Mrs Finnis explained.

At Prestige Inhome Care, we are committed to supporting initiatives that make a meaningful impact in our community. By supporting The Homer Hack, we support the advancement of research and provide much-needed assistance to those affected by rare neurological conditions.
