Staying healthy and active are the keys to longevity and ageing well. But how can you maintain your physical and emotional wellbeing as you get older and certain activities become more challenging? Here are six simple ways to live a stronger, healthier life, no matter your age.

1 . Build strength to help prevent falls

Building and maintaining strength in your muscles is an important step in improving balance, coordination and stability. Maintaining strength in everyday movements like walking will help decrease the risk of trips and falls.

Australian Seniors have compiled a list of 5 balance exercises for seniors which are a great place to start.

If you are in any kind of pain or have recently been injured consult your health professional first before attempting physical exercise. Once you have been given the all clear, you may want to ask a carer, relative or friend to help you with certain exercises to ensure you are being safe and supported, as needed.

2. Beware of any rapid changes in health

Being aware of changes in your body or mind is important and it is essential that you respond early to potential health concerns. Small symptoms such as fatigue, or pain can sometimes signal underlying issues. It is important you take any health concerns to your GP and keep up with routinely check-ups. Better Health has compiled some basic health checks you can do at home to regularly review your health. However, in doubt always seek medical assistance from a GP or other qualified professional.

3. Pick up a hobby

Picking a hobby is a great way to keep your mind active and stay connected with your friends and the wider community. By joining a local chess club, knitting group or book club, you may discover a new passion and meet new people within your community.

Get creative
Try something creative, such as painting. Giving yourself a creative outlet may mean you can express yourself in a different way with ease and learn a new skill.

Community groups and fitness classes
Engaging in community or social groups such as movement classes or swimming can ensure you’re keeping active but also opening up opportunities for new friendships within your neighborhood.

Check out local council services

A lot of councils offer free or discounted programs, resources and activities for seniors. From Seniors Festivals to free courses at the library, you’re likely to find a whole lot on offer in your local area by simply searching for your local council’s website online.

4. Stay Active

Staying physically active is a key component to maintaining your health. Activities like walking or stretching improve strength and confidence and helps to maintain mobility. If you need assistance with mobility you may wish to seek some support such as in-home care services which will enable you to stay active and independent. If you have a pet you may also benefit from having someone who can help you take them out for a daily walk or trip to the park.

5 . Prioritise emotional wellbeing

Prioritising emotional wellbeing and mental health is crucial for good health. Managing stress, staying socially connected, and taking time for activities you enjoy can help prevent feelings of anxiety or loneliness.

If you have been injured or are suffering from an illness you may get discouraged as you feel unable to do the activities that you have managed to do so easily in the past. However, with a little support you’d be surprised at what you can still manage to do, and you may find over time that you are able to increase your mobility, increase the amount of time doing an activity or do particular tasks more independently in the future.

6. Ask for help

Looking after your health doesn’t have to mean doing it alone. It’s important to ask for help when you notice you’re struggling with tasks that you used to do easily or are experiencing feelings of discouragement or isolation.  Whether it’s practical support such as personal care, medical advice, or companionship, reaching out can prevent small problems with your health from becoming overwhelming further down the track.
